When we are looking for something to do in the Austin area, we go to Austin360.com and AustinChronicle.com. Just about everything of interest in Austin is somewhere in the 360. Find events, venues, movies, restaurants, performers and more. If you can't find something in the 360, you should be able to find it in the Chronicle. The section titled "This Week in Music" in the Music section is good source for live music listing.

Tennis and Condominium Association Courts

The World of Tennis condominium complex is quite large -- something like 22 building on 20 acres. The grounds and building are well-maintained with trimmed shrubs and leafy trees. My favorite tree is a very old mesquite just outside the condo. There are two tennis courts directly outside the condo. These are labeled "Albert Hall" on the World of Tennis layout. Reservations are neither needed nor taken. These courts are 'first come first serve'. It is very important for you to read the rules about the courts and the condo grounds at Lakeway World of Tennis Condominium Association Rules (pdf). You must have already signed the rule-reading acknowledgement when you reserved our condo. Our neighbors like us and we want it to stay that way.

The tennis courts near the main building of The World of Tennis are owned now by ClubCorp with the attendant membership restrictions. The ClubCorp World of Tennis facilities usage is not part of your condo rental agreement. Please see:

Golf Courses near World of Tennis

Of the five golf courses near World of Tennis, four are ClubCorp private clubs and the fifth, Falconhead, is available to anyone. See The Hills of Lakeway web site for information about the courses and country clubs of Live Oak, Yaupon, The Hills, and Flintrock Falls. Book a Tee Time via information on the FalconHead Golf Club web site.

A Gold Signature Member of ClubCorp can use the private courses. Tournaments are often watched here.

What makes Falconhead particularly special is that it was laid out by the PGA Tour Design architects so you can be sure that every inch of the layout measures up to the exacting standards of the PGA.

Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin has served it's citizens since 1934 and has long been one of Austin's most popular course. Constructed originally by the Lions Club in 1928, Lions has hosted notable golfers, including Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and of course Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw. The course would be considered short by today's standards, 6001 yards, it's relatively narrow tree lined fairways and small greens provides a challenge to even the longest hitters. Tee times for weekdays are taken seven days in advance; Saturday and Sunday times are taken on Tuesday, in person when they open or via telephone at 512-477-6963 beginning at 7am.

The train ride at Zilcher Park in Austin is a winner with children. Don't miss swimmers in Barton Springs at Zilcher. The spring-fed pool stays a constant 68 degrees year around.

One of the delights of the Austin area is the superabundance of live music of every sort. Just about every corner bar has live music. Even the Zilker Park trail along Town Lake (it's Lady LBJ Lake now) often has Woody Woods plunking away on his guitar. Sixth and Congress is mobbed on weekends but still fun if you're young at heart.

We especially like the Fredericksburg and Bandera areas. Closer in is Marble Falls.

The Blue Bonnets and other wildflowers were outstanding in 2010. We've been told that abundant rain earlier in the year was the reason for the beautiful rainbow of blues, violets, reds, goldens, and yellows along the highways. Our favorite flower drive is on either side of La Grange on Texas Highway 71.
